Is STR’s Osthi, a Tamil title?

The latest film to get into a fix over its title is Osthi.

Tamizh Kappu Kazhagam (TKK), a pro-Tamil organisation has objected to the title of the film.

They claim there is no word in Tamil called Osthi, and it is not a pure Tamil name.

During the earlier Karunanidhi regime, there was a strict rule that films with only Tamil titles could be eligible for total entertainment tax exemption.

But under the new regime, entertainment tax has been increased to 30 %, so producers are not particular about using pure Tamil titles for their films.

STR's Osthi has already been censored with a U certificate, and the film is slated for release on December 8.

Tamannah back in kollywood

Tamannah is planning a big comeback in Tamil. The actress, who was last seen in Kollywood with Dhanush in 'Venghai', is now listening four scripts from Tamil filmmakers, and will sign at least a couple of them.

"I became so busy in Tollywood that I could not concentrate on Tamil films for a while. But now, I am keen to work in Kollywood again and busy reading scripts," says the 'Padikadhavan' and 'Ayan' heroine.

Meanwhile, one of her Telugu films ('Endhukante Premanta') will be simultaneously released in Tamil too. "It is a very good script and I have a meaty role to play," says Tamannah, who adds the movie will be ready by early next year.

Making it clear that it's interesting scripts and importance to her character that matters to her, Tamannah says: "As an actress, I should not view any barriers between languages and I believe am just doing that."

Mayakkam Enna Movie Online – Review

Director: Selvaraghavan

Producer: Gemini Film Circuit

Banner: Aum Productions

Music: GV Prakash Kumar

By Moviebuzz

The brothers are back with a bang. Five years after their last outing, ace director Selvaraghavan and his brother Dhanush a National Award winning actor have come out with Mayakkam Enna, an outstanding film.
The film has optimism, freshness and emotional honesty. Few filmmakers stick their necks out to tell difficult and different stories in these days of mindless entertainers. For this, Selvaraghavan deserve a thumbs-up.

Right away, you are drawn to the life of Karthik Subramaniam (Dhanush) a struggling freelance photographer in Chennai who does portfolios, weddings and other functions. Karthik has a keen interest in wild life photography and friends call him a genius, though he is bit of a loner. His role model is Madhesh Krishnaswamy (Ravi Prasad), a world renowned wildlife photographer and his dream is to be an assistant to this arrogant man.

Karthik hangs out with his friends and is extremely close to Sundar (Sundar) who introduces his girlfriend Yamini (Richa) to the gang. Initially Karthik and Yamini can't stand each other but there lies the twist, when opposites attract.

The director is on familiar grounds as he has gone back to his unique edgy filmmaking and writing style which one saw in his early films. The story hinges on relationship, and deals with anguish and ruminations of a genius who goes down the road of self-destruction due to pain of love and alcoholism. The most frequently recurring theme in the film is an admonition not to give up on life. Why surrender when you don't know what lies ahead?

Selva tells a simple story and packages it beautifully with the correct mix of entertainment elements. A couple of scenes stand out like the hatred between the lead pair evaporating into a kiss on a rainy night in a bus stand. The scenes of the hero pleading with the master photographer to make him his assistant and the shot in the forest when Karthick gets the shot of the rare bird that he was chasing.

In the end, the film belongs to Dhanush. He delivers his best work till date, emerging as the emotional soul of this film with spectacular, yet restrained performance that he constructs with the help of a solid script. Be it the spirited teenager, the frustrated photographer, the guilty friend, an insecure, unpredictable, alcoholic husband and the mature man at the end. For Dhanush alone, this film deserves a watch.

Richa is impressive in her first film in Tamil. She is able to stand up to Dhanush in the difficult climax scenes of the film. The voice modulation of Deepa Venkat who has dubbed for her has given the character the extra edge. Famous still photographer Sundar has made his acting debut as hero's best friend and is riveting. Ravi Prasad as the scheming ace photographer who boils with rage seeing younger competitors is convincing.

Technically, the film is slick and well shot. Cameraman Ramji's shot composition is visually hypnotic and emerges as one the film's biggest strengths. His long shots and use of natural lighting is marvellous. Kola Bhaskar's crisp editing makes Mayakkam Enna, the director's shortest film at 2 hours 25minutes.

One of the pillars of the movie is GV Prakash and his background score, which moves the story and brings out its myriad characters alive. His rousing background score where silence is used as a motif in the first half adds considerably to the film's evocative appeal. Kathal En Kadhal, Pirai Thedum and Naan Sonnadhum are all woven into the narrative seamlessly, while the first number Voda Voda.. is shot as a fun music-video style number.

Simplistic story telling with hard hitting impact, Mayakkam Enna will stay with you long after the lights have come back on. Here is a film maker who actually respects that a cinema audience can be both intelligent and mature.

Go for it!

Verdict: Very Good

Mayakkam Enna- An Intense Emotional Experience

Cast : Dhanush , Richa Gangopadhyay,Sunder Ramu

Music : G.V.Prakash

Cinematography : Ramji

Direction : Selvaraghavan

Production : Gemini Circuits

Review : Sai Shyam G ( The 70 mm Team)

Selvaraghavan, the cult film maker who has a unique fan following for his strikingly different approach to film making is back with Mayakkam Enna. His brother,Dhanush, plays the protagonist and Selva seems to have something extra-special for his brother every single time and this film is right up there. Quite often, movies with the simplest of storylines make a harder impact on you and Mayakkam Enna is one among them. It is a difficult art to showcase people as they are in films, but is a cakewalk for Selva and this film proves it yet again.

Story

The movie has a very simple plot wherein Karthik Swaminathan a.k.a. Genius (Dhanush) is a small time photographer who tries to make it big in wildlife photography. He is a happy-go-lucky guy who loves his passion and enjoys hanging out with his close friends and sister. He gets introduced to Yamini (Richa Gangopadhyay) who is dating one of his close friends Sundar (Sundar). Though they are at loggerheads with each other initially, Karthik and Yamini fall for each other. Their love story has a happy ending, but there are more twists in the story.

Meanwhile, Karthik's efforts to get a break in wildlife photography take a beating as his photographs are rejected by everyone. He is shattered even more when he finds that Madhesh Krishnaswamy (Ravi Prasad) whom he considers to be his biggest inspiration takes away the credit for his photograph. He meets with a brutal accident and his life turns miserable after that. Will Karthik get a new lease of life to chase his passion? Watch Mayakkam Enna for the answer.

Performances

Dhanush is the life of the film. One would feel that acting comes naturally to him after watching this film. He shoulders the entire responsibility to make this film work with the audience. The national award which he got earlier this year has done wonders for him. The scene where he works like a dog and the scene where he breaks down after his photographs are rejected are something phenomenal.

Richa Gangopadhyay is a great find for Tamil cinema. She emotes really well and the way she carries herself on-screen is mind blowing. The scene where she breaks down after losing her baby cannot be described mere words. Sundar has done a great job while Ravi Prasad looks more than convincing in the role of a world-renowned photographer.

Technicalities

G.V.Praksh Kumar's music is heart melting and adds so much value to the movie. The theme music which is used many a time is perfectly in-sync with the movie. The songs are good to listen but the picturisation could have been better. Cinematographer Ramji has done a splendid job in bringing out what the director had intended to see on screen. Editing by Kola Bhaskar deserves praise for making this slow paced movie interesting.

Director Selvaraghavan has kept things really simple. He has not tried to include unwanted scenes to increase the pace of the movie. He wanted to give a movie straight from his heart and he has done that with conviction. If dialogues like ' Pudicha velaya seyya edhukunga course lam padikanum ' command applause, scenes which show the complex human emotions without utterance of a single word command standing ovation.

Wow Factors

  • Brilliant performances from Dhanush and Richa
  • Director Sevaraghavan's earnest screenplay
  • G.V.Prakash Kumar's music
  • Slick cinematography and crisp editing

Oops Factors

  • A tad too melodramatic at times
  • CG not upto the mark

Bottomline

Mayakkam Enna is an intense emotional experience and it is a very special movie from Selvaraghavan. Go for it if you can appreciate a movie that relies heftily on human emotions which is backed up by riveting performances from the entire cast.

Vimala Raman ‘unaware’ of ‘Dam 999′ story

Even as the Tamil Nadu government issued a ban on screening 'Dam 999′, a controversial film which is allegedly on the Mullaperiyar issue, Vimala Raman, who has played a crucial role in the movie, has distanced herself from its knot.

"I am an NRI who was born and brought up in Australia. I honestly don't know anything about Mullaperiyar issue. When director Sohan Roy narrated the script to me, I accepted the offer impressed by the storyline and my character," she says.

The 'Raman Thediya Seethai' and 'Poi' actress adds: "I hardly imagined that the film would kick off such a controversy. I am sure that I did not have intention to hurt the sentiments of anyone and I viewed the film from only cinematic perspective."

Vimala, who is currently shooting for a Telugu movie in Manali, says she was told that the movie was based a true story about the disaster caused in 1975 by a dam at Banqiuo, in China. On the uproar caused by the film, she says, "I came to know through friends that the film was banned in Tamil Nadu."

‘Panjaa’ as ‘Kuri’ in Tamil!

Actress-singer Shruti Haasan will no more be playing the lead in the upcoming Pawan Kalyan starrer Gabbar Singh, a Telugu remake of Bollywood blockbuster Dabangg.

The producers signed Ileana for the lead role. Yes, we have been approached and we are trying to accommodate the project since it's a big budget film but nothing is confirmed yet, a source close to the actress said.

According to reports, the makers approached Ileana on the sets of another Telugu film, starring Allu Arjun. The filming of Gabbar Singh, directed by Harish Shankar, will begin this December.

Director Harish Shankar, maker of Pawan Kalyan new film Gabbar Singh which is a Telugu remake of Bollywood blockbuster Dabangg, has rubbished reports claiming that actress-singer Shruti Haasan has been replaced by Ileana in Gabbar Singh.

"Shruti Haasan is the Heroine of GS Guys pl ignore all rumors, She is super excited about her character in GS. She joins the shoot from Dec. Don't trust any news regarding GS until unless it's given by me nd my producer Ganesh garu," he wrote on Twitter.

Nayanthara to approach the cyber-crime police

Its only hours since we put up the news that Nayanthara is miffed about someone impersonating her on Twitter and the actress had denied being on the social networking site.

But now Nayan has decided to take up the issue seriously and is filing a case with Indian cyber-crime police authorities today.

A peeved Nayanthara said: "I understand that these are star trappings. All that I wanted was to gently warn the person to deactivate the fake Twitter account. But now understanding the intensity of the situation, I will be approaching the cyber-crime police."

We understand that after Nayan denied being on Twitter, the impersonator put upsome tweets on the sensitive issue of the ban on the film Dam 999. This had the actress see red and take up the issue with higher authorities.

Solo movie review

Movie : Solo
Director : Parashuram
Cast : Nara Rohith, Nisha Agarwal, Prakash Raj, Alia

Movie : Solo
Director : Parashuram
Cast : Nara Rohith, Nisha Agarwal, Prakash Raj, Alia

Gowtham (Nara Rohith) is brought up as an orphan and he craves to get married to a girl who has a large family. He falls for the charms of a college student Vaishnavi (Nisha Agarwal) who is from such a family.

Vaishnavi`s father (Prakash Raj) also wants his daughter to be married to a guy who has strong family ties. Hence he rejects Gowtham and Vasinavi`s love. Rest of the movie revolves around how Gowtham wins his love and all that he has wanted in his life.

Director Parashuram made his debut with a youthful entertainer Yuvatha and later made the flop movie Anjaneyulu. Unlike his earlier two films, Solo concentrates on subtle romance, witty dialogues and family values.

The basic story line of an orphan looking for a family through marriage is interesting and he builds the entire screenplay on it. The movie begins with a voice over by director Puri Jagannadh.

First half of the movie moves fast with the romance between Nara Rohith and Nisha. Comedy by M.S. Narayana and Nara Rohith`s gang of friends – Srinivas Reddy, Narsinha keep the audience entertained. Post interval, the movie falls in a predictable situation and runs slowly.

The film`s main strength is the climax and the dialogues, though the second half is similar to Bommarillu Bhaskar`s Parugu.

Nara Rohith has good looks but he needs to shrug off rigidity in expressions and body language. He was perfect for the role he portrayed in his first film – Baanam. But this film needs him to look endearing as it is a family-romantic drama but he is so stoic in many scenes.

Nisha Agarwal is good as she has charming looks and also delivers performance in the climax. Savita Reddy has provided voice to her. Pillar of the movie is Prakash Raj; this experienced and multiple award-winning actor holds the whole drama even in simple scenes. Jayasudha, Pavitra Lokesh, Shayaji Shinde and Ravi are suited well.

Ali and M S Narayana provide some good laughter. Srinivas Reddy, Narasimha and others have done justice to their roles.

Dasarathi Shivendra`s camera work is fantastic. For a small budgeted film both the visuals and artwork are pretty good. Manisharma`s music is just okay.

As a writer and director Parashuram has matured. From his first film to this, there is a steady growth in handling emotional scenes. As a dialogue writer, he scores big marks. Dialogues are his strength and he shows off his skills here. He should have made the film a little crispier in the second half.

Solo has an interesting plot line and provides emotional quotient in the second half. A little taut narration in the second half would have made much difference. On the whole, the film is nice and an above average family entertainer.

I love Beti B in Aishwarya’s arms the most: Abhishek

Actor Abhishek Bachchan opted for a smart answer to deal with Udya Chopra's question of choosing between wife Aishwarya and Beti B.

'I'm gonna ask you a very Uday (bright) question on twitter…Who do you love more, Beti B or Ash?, ' Uday, 38, asked Abhishek, 35, on micro-blogging site Twitter.

To which junior B replied, 'I love Beti B in Aishwarya's arms the most.'

Aishwarya Rai gave birth to her and husband Abhishek Bachchan's first child November 16 and since then the entire family, including grandpa Amitabh Bachchan, is busy spending time with the new-born.

'First day back at work after Beti B. And so difficult to concentrate. Thoughts are monopolized by a certain little lady,' Abhishek further posted.

I was not approached for Vijay’s project: PC

Though it's almost official that Kajal Aggarwal would be the leading lady of Vijay's forthcoming film to be directed by AR Murugadoss (tentatively titled 'Thuppakki'), there were reports that Priyanka Chopra would also be part of the movie.

The beauty queen turned actress, who started her career in films with Vijay starrer 'Thamizhan', has cleared the air now. "It is true that I love to work with Vijay and Murugadoss. But at the same time, I should also admit that I have not been approached for the said project."

She says, "Vijay is my first hero and I still remain a fan of him. The Thamizhan experience is still green in me. Similarly, Murugadoss is one of my favourite filmmakers. I would work with both of them if I get a right opportunity at the right time."

The film to be produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu (earlier SA Chandrasekhar was said to be the producer), will be made on a huge budget, "Murugadoss has penned a gripping script. He is aware of the expectations of his joining hands with the Ilayathalapathy," sources say.

Mouna Guru Movie Online – Music Review

This film with Arulnidhi and Iniya in the lead role has songs composed by Thaman. First of all, it can be presumed that for Thaman, the current phase of his career is shooting vertical. He has scored music for STR's Osthi the songs of which have already hit the air with much fray. This actor-turned musician has the niche to prefer those tunes which have energy in the rendition and the whole orchestration. This is how he shaped Osthi Mamey and Kala Sala songs. Now his next venture, Mouna Guru's audio is out recently. Actually the album has got little numbers, perhaps the design mooted by the film director. However, the quality of songs cannot be gauged with the quantity. The lyrics from the veterans Vaali, Na.Muthukumar and Karky added much fervor to the tune and the voices of Karthik, Harini and young modules like Rahul Nambiar, Ranjith Kumar and other new hosts. Here's the review of the songs from Mouna Guru.

Pudhupunal
Lyrics: Vaali
Playback: Rahul Nambiar, Ranjith, MLR Karthikeyan and Sam
Vaali is back to the game of words in this number after Mankatha and Osthi. This is very interesting to note that a versatile lyricist at the septuagenarian for the budding musicians and the playback singers. Vaali's choice of words is simple and the rhyming is also meticulous. The voice cluster of Rahul, Ranjith, Sam and Karthikeyan makes this song lively and energetic. Thaman can be patted for his trial of fused effect for the situation. The first word, puthupunal itself proves this. An impressive opening for this album from Thaman.

Yenna Idhu
Lyrics: Na.Muthukumar
Playback: Ranjith, Rahul Nambiar, Ramya and Rita
If we are familiar with the mild melody from Ilayaraja in Agni Natchiram with Yesudoss and Janaki's rendition, "Thoongatha Vizhikal Rendu", then this number from Thaman is much akin to it. The instrumentation is very apt for this longing situation as Thaman has found the lyrics too objective. Rahul makes the rendition with much ease as in the case of Rahul. For the female part, Ramya's voice scores well for the diction. Chellamazahi, Nooru Thee alai are inventives like Alagiya Theeiye. Good number to carry on the album.

Anaamika
Lyrics: Madan Karky
Playback: Karthik and Harini
This song comes with lot of freshness and lingering emotions. The lyrics are very much lovely as the word Anaamika comes very often as the anthathi. The rhyming like Thisaimani and avathani (which are utter translation of "compass" and "assumption"). This presentation may sound pure literary but it fits in well for the situation. Thaman has found a new source of words from Karky. Karthik's voice takes us to the dizzy heights of excitement. Harini's rendition is accurate as much for a mean melody. The orchestration is, somehow experimental, but overall effect is above average scale. In the entire song, the words and phrases like Irudayapeyarchi, araiyinil pirayena, araikurai uraiglai, uraisiraiaraigalil are pure literal Tamil classifications. In all this song is uniquely carved for youth's induction of love. The number reach across the mass after the film release.

Theme – Thaman S
This fills in the need for the number slot but it has some effect to listen. Thaman has made this fusion with much care and professional approach. Nothing to be derived for any sort of lapse since this is just a theme fusion. Perhaps, Thaman was confined to go along with the requirements preferred by the director. A lot is there to listen for in this fusion as Thaman might have cherished his own talent to bloom further. Really it should be a big try for both Thaman and the audience.

Conclusion:
There are many instances to prove the mettle of little things, like Thirvalluvar's couplet which has just two lines but conveys a lot. A small peck of wine or whisky may lead to an entire word for a time being. A little bird standing on the branches of a greener tree will be a beautiful sight to watch. Just like them, in this album Thaman has brought out a few number of songs. Each one is different in tune, orchestration and method of fusion. Moreover, the lyrics are selective for the prescribed situation. Thaman is up the mark of growth from this album, though there is nothing to make extraordinary. He has survived on his step towards next. Keep it up, Thaman.

MeeGo Review

Over the last few weeks, some people have been mailing me wanting to know if MeeGo is the best ever Operating System. In my universe,I can say MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan OS is literally the heart and soul of the Nokia N9.Compared to others, the OS is a breath of fresh air compared to the world of iOS and Android which have become monotonous with smart phones addicts.Unfortunately, the Nokia N9 will probably be the first and last for MeeGo as it will barely get the chance to bathe in the same light of radiance as its competitors because Nokia has opted for Windows Phone OS for its smartphones.

However, it's hard to ignore what exactly has been achieved since MeeGo came into the limelight.Anytime I pull N9 out of my pocket,I notice that the screen always faintly shows the time along with any notification icons and a screensaver-like feature which is common with previous Nokia phones which uses very little power thanks to the wonders of AMOLED.The MeeGo OS is the most user friendly OS available in the market now.For example anytime I want to unlock my phone, I simply swipe my finger from any edge of the screen, and am taken straight to the applications screen where a grid of icons awaits.

As compared to others, once in the applications view, tapping any icon launches the bookmark or associated app, and while holding any icon lets me move it to another position on the grid. When i swipe across the display from the right edge, am taken to the open applications view where there is a grid of cards representing running apps. When I slide my finger to the left,I am dropped into the event view, which shows the date, current weather, a list of notifications and status updates from social networks.

Unlike other OS,MeeGo powered N9 comes preloaded with a bunch of apps for using Ovi Music, Facebook, Skype,Track and Protect,Twitter and AccuWeather. On the low side of MeeGo,there is no way to actually combine any two or more apps into one folder just as iOS or Android allows its users. When loading www.wanarua.com,it is a simple affair for the N9 as compared to my iPhone 4S and the WebKit-based browser which is HTML5-compliant works exactly like any of Android or iOS with usual controls.

MeeGo offers no Flash support and there is no browsing history beyond the ability to navigate up and down the current URL stack using the back and forward buttons.Instead, each time I open a new window I am presented with a tag cloud which contains keywords related to the sites I've already visited.MeeGo is an OS like no other because it allows for smooth web surfing and watching videos and despite its minimalistic beauty and the brilliant software, it's sad when i think that the MeeGo OS may never become the platform of choice for future phones. Nevertheless, if you're looking for something different outside of the iOS and Android platforms, then you may just want to take a look at the MeeGo powered Nokia N9.

Vithagan movie review

Movie : Vithagan
Director : Parthepan
Producer : Manickam Narayanan
Music : Joshua Sridhar
Cast : Parthepan, Poorna, Milind Soman

Trying too hard to be cool, Vithagan starts promisingly and has the ingredients for a movie one would probably enjoy very much, but somehow they never come together. There's a Kaakha Kaakha-style premise, in which an upright ACP tries to clean the city and take on the villains.

If the film manages to keep you hooked, it is those witty one-liners and clever dialogues by Parthepan, crisp editing by Antony and truly interesting twists. Joshua Sridhar's music is another saving grace.

Rowdran (Parthepan) is an upright cop who is fighting not only the scums of the society but also his seniors who are hand-in-glove with the goondas. For this, he takes law into his hands and goes on an unstoppable killing spree wiping out the wanted criminals in police files, one by one in carefully planned operations.

But soon, the film goes from a legitimate thriller to a typical revenge drama without much warning. In a flashback, we are told that our orphan cop had a picture-perfect family which was wiped out by Badri (Milind Soman). And now to bring the don back from a foreign destination and take revenge, Rowdran who is put behind bars turns a goonda and joins Sena (another don) and takes on Badri.

Written and directed by Parthepan, this police story is painfully predictable, and offers nothing original especially the blood soaked climax. Mercy (Poorna) is an orphan who falls hook-line-sinker for our macho hero but has a sad end. Poorna is a fine actress with the right expressions and shows loads of promise. But sadly the right break is yet to come her way.

Parthepan is there is every scene and he carries the character of Rowdran in his own distinct style. But was there a need for that dream song or the last song where he shakes a leg with an item girl? Milind Soman as Badri who finally suffers from Delusional Disorder (!!) looks more like a caricature and is wasted

The film makes some interesting observations but doesn't do it interestingly enough!

Urumi Tamil version in December
